Becoming a teacher: A Tough yet Fulfilling Profession
(A Reflection about ABC of Desirable Teacher Attributes)
Impatient… hot tempered.. the traits that absolutely a big no no for a person who wants to indulge himself into teaching force. Dedication… determination…the virtues one must possess for him to be rightfully called a teacher. These thoughts come out to my mind as I have finished reading the printed page about the ABC of Desirable Teacher Attributes.
In latter years of my life, I have been acknowledging teachers as the one who gives tons of assignments and nose bleeding exams. I’m referring them as the walking textbook turned into a monster. But those days are gone. I have found out that being a teacher requires a lot of skills and attributes for them can be classified as competent teachers. They don’t need to be perfect but need to be at least close to it. Teachers play a very complex job in and out of the classroom. Actually, those letters in the alphabet are not enough to enumerate the traits a teacher should have. But generally, these ABCs can be summed up into your 1-2-3.
One Educator
We come to school to learn, to be educated. In that institution we will be meeting several people who will inculcate knowledge in our mind. These people are the so called teacher who are said to be engaged in the noblest profession. These individuals in order to share knowledge should be competent and well-equipped of what she has to teach. When in the classroom, they should be confident enough so the students will believe what they are saying. They must possess the active atmosphere so the class won’t be a boring one. They should also be the role model for the students. They should be punctual, orderly and neat, and an organized person.
Second Parent
Teachers are referred as the second parent of a student. This is because the students will likely be spending most of his active time in the school particularly in the classroom with their teachers. With this reality, teachers should have the parenthood aspect of their individuality. Acting as a parent, one should be sensitive and observable to the students beyond the subject areas is concern. Being passionate and good adviser is a one major role of a teacher.
Third duty as a friend
Honesty is said to be a best policy, a trait that commonly expected for a friend to have. Being a teacher requires you to be a friend, a friend in terms that your relationship with your students is sincere, genuine and honest.
How a teacher can reach out to students? This is when one becomes approachable, inspiring, and grateful to them. And at most, a very optimistic person that always sees the bright side of life.
No matter how broad we see the worth of teaching profession they are still humans who only after for a good response from the people they are encountering. Ma’am, Maestro, Sir, Mentor, Prof…. no matter what respectful words you called them, they are still the person equipped with the sense of dedication for them to fill the noblest profession of being a teacher.
